Troops have occupied the southern mountain village of Polomolok after driving away a large group of Muslim separatists and a kidnapping gang in fierce clashes that killed at least 20 of the enemy, army spokesman Maj. Julieto Ando said.

He said the dead were members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Pentagon kidnapping gang. A rebel spokesman acknowledged the army attack but denied that any rebels were killed. He said three army soldiers were killed and no Pentagon members were in the village.
