Sex Education Need Not Include Abortion
Re “Sex Education Classes Make Parent Uneasy,” Jan. 13: There is no statement in the National Health Education Standards, the California Health Framework and the California Challenge Standards for health education indicating that abortion should be included in school health/human sexuality education at any grade level. As a school health educator, your article made me extremely uneasy.
Until the California Legislature mandates health education beyond sixth grade and more narrowly defines the scope of instruction, local school boards continue to determine the scope and sequence of health education, including human sexuality education, and thereby create opportunities for individualized interpretations.
