$1.94-Million Settlement Approved in Jail Fire
From Times Wire Reports
A judge in Bakersville authorized a $1.94-million settlement between Mitchell County and the families of 17 inmates, eight of whom died in the deadliest jail fire in North Carolina history.
The payment from the county’s insurer was the maximum the victims and families could get under state law.
However, some family members said additional civil claims were possible.
