Confederate groups and others gathered at the governor’s mansion in Jefferson City to protest the removal of Confederate flags from state historic sites.

The decision to remove the flags was purely political, said John Wolfe of the Missouri division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The state took the action on the urging of Missouri Rep. Richard A. Gephardt, who said the Confederate battle flag shouldn’t fly “anytime, anywhere.”
