The musical comedy “Chicago” led nominations for Screen Actors Guild Awards on Tuesday, scoring five nods -- one for outstanding ensemble cast and four others for Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Golden Globe winners Gere and Zellweger were nominated for outstanding male and female actor in a lead role, respectively. Queen Latifah and Zeta-Jones were nominated in the supporting actress category. Zeta-Jones had been nominated for a Globe in the best actress in a comedy or musical category.

“The Hours” garnered four nominations, including outstanding ensemble, female actor in a lead role (Nicole Kidman), female actor in a supporting role (Julianne Moore) and male actor in a supporting role (Ed Harris).

Kidman, who won a Golden Globe last week for her portrayal of novelist Virginia Woolf in “The Hours,” said by phone from New York, “It means a lot to me ... because it’s from our fellow actors and having never had it before, it’s important.

“When you are younger, you are very much cast in the girlfriend role, so stepping into your 30s,” she continued, it’s fulfilling “to be able to play fully rounded women in all of their glory and flaws as well.”

Joining Gere in the male lead category are Adrien Brody for “The Pianist,” Nicolas Cage for “Adaptation,” Daniel Day-Lewis for “Gangs of New York” and Jack Nicholson for “About Schmidt.” Cage previously won the SAG Award for “Leaving Las Vegas” seven years ago; Nicholson won five years ago for “As Good as It Gets.” Both went on to receive the Academy Award for best actor.

Kidman, Moore and Zellweger will be competing for SAG’s female lead honor with Salma Hayek for “Frida” and Diane Lane for “Unfaithful.”

A conspicuous omission from the nominations, announced by Megan Mullally and Michael Clarke Duncan, was Meryl Streep, who last week won the Golden Globe for supporting actress for “Adaptation.” Streep was not nominated for outstanding female actor in a lead role for “The Hours” or as female actor in a supporting role for “Adaptation.”

Sony, the studio that released “Adaptation,” submitted Streep as a lead female candidate, as did Paramount/Miramax for “The Hours,” so in effect the actress was competing against herself, perhaps canceling herself out.

Michael Caine, a Golden Globe nominee, was shut out of the lead male actor category for “The Quiet American,” as was sentimental favorite Paul Newman, also a Globe nominee, in the male supporting role category for “ Road to Perdition.”

Double nominees include Moore, who also was nominated as lead actress for “Far From Heaven,” and Kathy Bates, who received nods for female actor in a supporting role for “About Schmidt” and outstanding female actor in a television movie or miniseries for “My Sister’s Keeper.”

In the TV categories, “The Sopranos,” “The West Wing,” “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “Will & Grace” are among the series with multiple nominations.

Two randomly selected panels totaling 4,200 SAG members from across the country chose this year’s nominees. The entire active membership of the guild, about 98,000 members, will be eligible to vote for the winners.

The SAG Awards will be presented March 9 during a two-hour ceremony televised on TNT from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.
