What fuels that ‘cue fever?

Men. You can’t keep them away from an open flame. In the advanced stages of this condition, they’ll invest thousands of dollars in multi-station, stainless-steel barbecues with everything -- including the kitchen sink -- or build backyard brick ovens that eat up precious patio space.

Fortunately, there is a sensible solution for the grilling obsessive: The portable barbecue -- whether gas or charcoal, and that’s a whole other debate -- has come of age.

Weber’s Q, the $175 iMac equivalent of propane grills, is a shining example of both form and function. Outfitted with a professional-grade cast-iron cooking surface to ensure even heat distribution, flip-out side trays and a disposable drip pan, the Q is designed to maximize grilling space without dominating a tabletop.

To complement the Q, there’s a wealth of accessories that will make the outdoor chef feel like a backyard James Bond. According to the grillerati at the international chain Barbecues Galore, the biggest hit on Father’s Day was a sleek, 21-piece stainless-steel tool set -- complete with corncob holders -- that comes in an aluminum-clad attache case.

For the truly high-tech host, there’s also a barbecue version of a baby monitor. The device employs a standard meat thermometer with a transmitter and wireless receiver that can be attached to a belt loop, ensuring a perfectly seared steak while the grill master mixes martinis -- shaken, not stirred.
