He conducts his life with family in mind

When fireworks light up the skies over the Hollywood Bowl this Fourth, he’ll be conducting the L.A. Philharmonic’s Fireworks Spectacular. Besides being guest conductor for the Phil at the Bowl, and living here, he’s music director for the Anchorage Symphony, the Flagstaff Symphony and the Hudson Valley (New York) Symphony.

With a passion

When I’m not traveling, I do rock music as well with a Navajo group out of Flagstaff called Burning Sky. We’ve put out one self-titled project, but I want to get a chance to do more.

Family ties

My wife and I -- she’s a professional comedian -- traveled the world for 17 years. I still travel a lot so I try to spend time with my daughter when I’m here. We’ll go over to Universal CityWalk, just because there are so many shops and things to see, and my daughter plays in the water under the misting globe there. The other night we went down to Santa Monica Pier -- she loves to watch the street performers and she absolutely loves to ride the carousel.

Green eggs and ham

I love my Saturday mornings. We get up and have our breakfast. Once in a while my daughter eats green eggs and ham and I eat it with her. OK, it’s not really green eggs and ham. My wife mixes a little green food coloring in.

Play or pay

We’ve got an indoor jungle gym in the house, or we might go do the jungle gym at Shane’s Inspiration in Griffith Park. And over in Moorpark there’s Tierra Rejada Farm. It has a petting zoo. You can pick fruit and go for nice walks.

Art, anyone?

We go to the Getty quite frequently. And we like LACMA; they’ve got a really nice children’s museum, and sometimes we’ll take part in the activities.

White out

Before a concert, I’ve got to go pick up my tuxedo at the cleaners. I live in either a white tux or very casual clothes. I shop the Gap over on Ventura Boulevard for jeans and everything else I get from the Armani Xchange on Sunset in West Hollywood. Everything I put on in there seems to fit.

Dinner bell

I’m mostly a chicken kind of guy. So we grill corn on the cob and eat grilled chicken for dinner. Once in a while we’ll go out -- either to Jerry’s Deli over on Ventura or to Tony Roma’s -- you know, a place that’s toddler-friendly. If someone comes into town, it’s back to Jerry’s for a corned beef sandwich and cocktails, if they like. I really love California Pizza Kitchen. I’ll have the chicken focaccia sandwich and my wife will have kung pao chicken -- they serve it over spaghetti -- it’s really different, but delicious.

We also love this Chinese restaurant over on Ventura called Bamboo. What do we order? Kung pao chicken; this dish with kind of thick noodles and boiled dumplings. We try to watch our fat intake -- well, at least the noodles are boiled, not fried.
