Flooding in southern, eastern and central China has killed 298 people and affected almost 100 million, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said in Geneva.

Abbas Gullet, director of disaster management at the Red Cross, said: “We know that some areas are still inaccessible as they have been cut off by flood waters.” A Red Cross spokeswoman said “affected” could mean anything from minor farm damage to loss of homes or life. Sixteen provinces have been hit by the floods, which usually start in June and ebb by September.
