Energy: Natural Gas Not Our Only Resource

Re “Defusing an Energy Crisis,” editorial, July 9: Your solution to import natural gas from elsewhere is a stopgap measure that merely “exports” our basic energy-deficit problem in the long run, and does so in a wider world that is simultaneously increasing its demand for these natural resources.

We shirk our responsibility to face a hard, uncertain future by not revolutionizing our wasteful ways here at home: mass solarization and domestic production of natural gas; more attractive public transportation for commuters and weekend travelers; elimination of nonutility SUV and light truck use; revamping of our cancerous, consumption-oriented economic system; and inspiring our students to redesign the future with a sustainability focus rather than simply maintain a soon-to-be bankrupt present. It is better sooner rather than later to look over the abyss and take these measures seriously.

There is no excuse for not having solar power as an alternative to the natural gas shortage issue. This not only would solve the blackout situation but would address the immediate issue of air pollution in the Southern California area. By halting the growth of new toxic power plants and replacing them with solar energy (on rooftops) we could clean the air and save energy.
