From Times Wire Reports

African envoys arrived in Sao Tome and Principe for talks aimed at persuading the military junta that seized power in the island nation last week to restore civilian rule. Three separate delegations, including one from regional power Nigeria, traveled under an agreement between the junta and diplomats from the United States and Portugal.

Sao Tome and Principe, a former Portuguese colony of about 140,000 people, is in the Gulf of Guinea, a region of growing importance as a source of oil.
