Once Again, Giants Get Past Rockies, 5-3

Barry Bonds hit his 644th career home run and Yorvit Torrealba homered on his 25th birthday as the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies, 5-3, Saturday, handing them their sixth consecutive road loss.

The West Division-leading Giants have won three in a row and eight of 11. The Rockies have lost four in a row and are 15-34 away from Coors Field, including 1-6 at Pacific Bell Park.

Bonds connected for his major league-leading 31st homer to lead off the fourth.

San Diego 2, Arizona 0 -- Adam Eaton (5-7) combined with four relievers on an eight-hitter at San Diego as the Padres ended a losing streak at five. The right-hander gave up six hits in 6 2/3 innings and allowed only two runners to reach second base -- Luis Gonzalez in the fourth and Shea Hillenbrand in the sixth.

Chicago 1, Florida 0 -- Kerry Wood threw a two-hitter for the Cubs in front of 30,432 -- the third-largest crowd of the season in Miami. The only run was unearned and scored on Alex Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Wood (10-6), who walked five and hit a batter, struck out eight to increase his season total to 164, most in the major leagues.

Brad Penny (8-7) struck out eight, walked one and gave up four hits in eight innings.

Atlanta 7, New York 4 -- Russ Ortiz earned his league-leading 13th victory as the Braves roughed up former teammate Tom Glavine at Atlanta.

Ortiz (13-4) won his sixth in a row. He gave up three runs and four hits, struck out five and walked four. John Smoltz got the final out for his 35th save in 37 opportunities. It was the 100th save of his career.

Glavine (6-10) lasted only 4 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs and nine hits. In four games against the Braves this season, he is 0-4 with a 10.35 earned-run average.

Milwaukee 1, Pittsburgh 0 -- Ben Sheets (8-7) pitched seven shutout innings at Pittsburgh. He gave up seven hits and struck out seven. Jeff D’Amico (6-10) gave up doubles to Geoff Jenkins and John Vander Wal in the fourth for the only scoring. In all, he gave up nine hits in seven innings.

Philadelphia 4, Montreal 3 -- Tomas Perez’s bases-loaded RBI single to left-center with two out in the bottom of the 11th inning improved the Phillies’ record in extra-inning games to 7-1.
