My experience as a clinical aromatherapist is quite different from the aromatherapy described in Nelson Handel’s article (“The Sweet Smell of Excess,” June 15). Utilizing this discipline to treat a person’s health issues requires serious training, including studying the chemistry and properties of 350 key essential oils.

My clinical knowledge helps promote the well-being of clients who suffer from depression, high blood pressure, stress and immune dysfunction, and helps ease the symptoms of fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite and anxiety associated with chemotherapy and radiation. My patients who undergo these treatments show a marked difference in their ability to relax, heal and tolerate these debilitating therapies. Their experiences, along with others documented and studied in the U.S. and abroad, cannot be discounted.
