Bob Hope’s Generosity Will Never Be Forgotten

Share

Re Bob Hope (obituary, July 29): I was on the writing staff of a Bob Hope special in 1976 and had to take something to his house for approval. As he entered the living room, a small dog darted past him, barking and yapping at me. Bob glared down at the dog angrily, stamped his foot and said, “Ga-dammit, I’ve told you a million times. You don’t bark at the writers, you lick their shoes!”

The young kid who roared with laughter at Bob’s Tuesday night radio shows left that house 10 feet off the ground.

I am one of the millions of veterans who had the privilege of being entertained by Bob Hope, Frances Langford, Jerry Colonna and the troupe during World War II. They, and the love they brought to us at remote corners of the world in a time of killing and devastation, will never be forgotten. Thanks for the memories! In addition, our deep sympathy to Mrs. Hope and the family. God bless him and grant him a big stage in heaven.

Bob Hope is gone. He made my father laugh in Europe in World War II, my older brother laugh during the Korean War and me laugh in Vietnam. Bob, you have been called for a repeat performance for all who have gone before you to make sure you have a great place to perform and an audience who has always really loved you. We will miss you. The world will miss you.
