Trial Starts for Alleged Leader of Bali Bombings

An Afghanistan-trained militant known for his hatred of America went on trial on charges of masterminding Oct. 12’s Bali nightclub bombings. Imam Samudra is charged with planning and executing the attacks that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists. He is suspected of being a key figure in the terror group Jemaah Islamiah.
Samudra’s lawyers demanded judges throw out the case, arguing that heshould not be tried under new anti-terror laws because they were put in place after the bombings.
