$3-Million Ransom Sought for U.N. Team

Unknown gunmen who kidnapped three U.N. observers and their Georgian interpreter in a remote gorge between Georgia and separatist Abkhazia demanded $3 million for their release, a Georgian official said.
The United Nations has said it will not pay any ransom to secure the team’s release. The U.N. began its mission in 1993 after separatists drove Georgian government troops out of Abkhazia in a war that killed about 10,000 people. Abkhazia is not recognized as a nation by any country or international body.
