House OKs Plan to Free Up Airwaves
The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a measure that would create a multimillion-dollar fund to encourage government agencies to vacate highly desirable airwaves sought by cell phone carriers and other commercial users.
The fund, which would be financed by the proceeds from government airwave auctions, would compensate the Pentagon and other federal agencies that move their communications services to less developed parts of the radio spectrum.
House approval of the measure comes in response to growing consumer demand for more airwaves to accommodate mobile phones and other commercial wireless services. A similar measure is being weighed by the Senate.
