Lincoln Center upheaval goes on

Share

Less than two weeks after the New York Philharmonic decided to leave Lincoln Center for Carnegie Hall in 2006, the chairman of Lincoln Center’s redevelopment project has resigned.

Peter M. Lehrer, a New York construction executive named to oversee the extensive renovation last September, is the second person to step down from the post. His predecessor, Marshall Rose, resigned in October 2001.

“We regret that there was not a fit between Peter’s expectations and the appropriate responsibilities of a chairman,” said Reynold Levy, president of Lincoln Center. “We wish him well.”

The troubled project has been scaled back from its original estimated $1.5-billion budget. A renovation of Avery Fisher Hall, home of the Philharmonic for more than four decades, remains one of the major components of the project, although the exact nature of the project is still being discussed, a spokesman said.
