L.A. film festival joins with market

Combining the art of film with the commerce of the movie business, AFI Fest Los Angeles and the American Film Market are joining forces.

The American Film Market, at which independent films and TV productions are packaged, bought and sold, will move to November in 2004 to overlap with the AFI L.A. International Film Festival.

Film market -- A Quick Takes item in Wednesday’s Calendar mistakenly said that the international film market known as Mifed is held in Madrid. It is in Milan.

Los Angeles has several film festivals, but unlike the higher-profile Cannes, Toronto and Sundance festivals, it has not offered a concurrent market at which distributors can buy the rights to films.

AFI Fest likely would gain a higher public profile running concurrently with a market, possibly giving it some advantage over its principal rival, the Independent Feature Project/L.A. Film Festival, currently running until Saturday.

The switch will mean that there will be two American Film Markets in 2004, one Feb. 25-March 3, and Nov. 3-10. AFI Fest is scheduled to run Nov. 4-14 next year (it runs Nov. 6-16 this year).

The move will put the American Film Market in nearly direct competition with the international market in Madrid known as Mifed, which also takes place in November. With two events taking place at the same time on different sides of the globe, many participants would have to choose between them.
