Pilot error was to blame for the collision of two F-15C Eagle fighter planes during a training exercise over the Nevada desert, Air Force investigators said.

Capt. Matthew Zamisk ejected safely and his aircraft, valued at $31 million, was destroyed when it crashed about 65 miles northeast of Nellis Air Force Base.

Maj. Steve Early flew back to the base; damage to his jet was estimated at $480,000.

Both aircraft were assigned to the 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron at Nellis.
