Suspected Illegal Immigrants Flee
About 20 suspected illegal immigrants fled a sport-utility vehicle Monday night and ran for cover in the Santa Ana River when their vehicle was stopped by the CHP in Anaheim, authorities said.
A California Highway Patrol dispatcher said six people were rounded up and that officers, including Anaheim police, were looking among the reeds for the others.
A CHP report said the incident began at 7:55 p.m., when an officer stopped the SUV near the Lakeview Avenue offramp on the westbound Riverside Freeway. The reason for the traffic stop was unknown.
The six people taken into custody were transported to the CHP office in Santa Ana, where they were to be interviewed by U.S. Border Patrol agents, authorities said.
