JWA to Launch Online Aircraft Tracking System
John Wayne Airport will launch an Internet flight tracking system today that will allow live viewing of arriving and departing aircraft at the facility and overflights throughout much of Southern California.
Airplane-shaped icons will be superimposed on a map that covers five to 80 miles around the airport. Each aircraft will be color-coded to denote whether it is arriving, departing or just flying by.
The system can be accessed by the public beginning at 1 p.m. on the John Wayne Airport Web site, www.ocair.com, said airport spokeswoman Ann McCarley.
The system, called AirportMonitor, is also available on the Los Angeles International Airport Web site: www.lawa.org/lax/htmlenv/flighttracks.html. Orange County residents will be able to track flights to and from Long Beach Airport and LAX.
McCarley said John Wayne Airport contracted with Megadata Corp. for the tracking system at a cost of $94,000 for three years.
“It gives visitors access to the general location of aircraft and traffic flow patterns,” she said. “Previously, this was only available to the Federal Aviation Administration.”
Visitors to the site will be able to track flights by aircraft type, flight number and location at a specific time.
