Pop a Dramamine before this ride

Just when you thought reality shows had hit the ad nauseam stage, along comes one that reduces the genre to the level of plain old nausea.

“Thrill Rides Put to the Test” (tonight at 8 on the Discovery Channel) pits six pairs of “hard-core ride freaks” against one another in six tests of endurance, agility and ingenuity at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia. It’s kind of like “Survivor,” sort of like “Fear Factor.” As in those shows, the contestants will appear to some viewers to be super-studs. To others, morons with way too much time on their hands.

The six challenges progressively increase in difficulty, starting with simple bungee cord flips and proceeding to plummeting toward earth at 60 mph while trying to hit targets with water balloons.

The final contest is the most dastardly: Contestants must bolt sushi, wash it down with nachos, then ride the Goliath roller coaster and finish up with a mooseburger and spicy fries for dessert. Plastic ponchos are provided.

If you have some downtime and you like to watch boring people being tortured, this may be the show for you.

If you want even more dread and circuses, the program is followed by repeats of “Extreme Rides 2002” at 9 p.m., about the newest and most advanced roller coasters and attractions, and “Top 10 Coasters” at 10 p.m., about the best coasters in the U.S. Then you can watch “Thrill Rides” again at 11 p.m.

If, on the other hand, carousel horsies are more your speed and you like to treat Japanese cuisine with more respect, take a pass.

I was unclear on one point about the “Thrill Rides” test: If you win, do you get Joe Millionaire?
