Burdens of war

I wish to commend writer Nora Zamichow for her fair and balanced handling of the draftee vs. enlistee question (“Deciding Who Bears the Burdens of War,” Feb. 26).

As a combat veteran, I cringe when I hear supposedly well-meaning politicians belittle and demean our military to further their agenda by keeping alive the myth that the military is for people who can’t make it anywhere else.

The military offers training in more than 200 fields, as well as funding college educations. People join the military for a variety of reasons, but they have one thing in common: They are patriots and should be treated as such.
