Times Writer Wins Award
Times editorial writer Andrew Malcolm has won a distinguished writing award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors for his work in 2002, the society announced Saturday.
Malcolm shares the editorial-writing award with David Barham of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock.
“During 2002, Americans learned to become more comfortable with uncertainty. But many things -- life’s values, life’s absurdities -- didn’t change,” the society said. “Andrew Malcolm’s editorials were there to remind us with a knowing nod and a worldly wink.”
Singled out for special praise was an editorial in which Malcolm, commenting on what he called the “too many decisions” syndrome, lamented the endless choices people face in selecting their passwords for computers, e-mail, voice mail and ATMs.
The judges said Malcolm’s editorials set a tone that was “graceful, clever, evocative, humorous. He played language like a musical instrument.”
Times photographer Don Bartletti was a finalist in the competition for the society’s photojournalism award.
The awards will be presented April 10 during the society’s convention in New Orleans.
