Bruin guard Cedric Bozeman is scheduled to have surgery on his right shoulder later this month and will not play again this season.

Bozeman, a sophomore, has insisted for two weeks that the shoulder was merely bruised. He said last week X-rays had not been taken and that he believed he might return.

But continued pain prompted him to seek medical attention. Surgery is planned after the winter quarter ends March 21 and is expected to tighten instability in the shoulder, a UCLA spokesman said.

Bozeman had surgery for a tear in the same shoulder during his junior year at Santa Ana Mater Dei High. He became a McDonald’s All-American as a senior.

Since aggravating the injury at Arizona State on Feb. 15, Bozeman has sat out four games. He initially hurt the shoulder against Oregon on Jan. 30 and aggravated it against USC on Feb. 5.

He averaged 7.3 points and 3.2 assists in 21 games. Bozeman shot 40.8%, slightly less than the 41.3% he shot while averaging four points as a freshman. His free-throw shooting improved to 51.4% from 28.6% and he made two in the last seconds to enable UCLA to beat Georgetown by a point Feb. 8.

Forward Dijon Thompson, who aggravated a sprained ankle against Oregon on Saturday, is expected to play against Washington State on Thursday.

Thompson is second on the team with a 13.9-point scoring average and made the winning shot to defeat California two weeks ago. However, his production has suffered in recent games.
