China shut down a newspaper that published an impassioned plea for political reform by Mao Tse-tung’s personal secretary, sources said.
Li Rui, 85, criticized Mao for creating a cult of personality and subsequent leader Deng Xiao- ping for failing to carry out reforms. The interview was published March 3 in 21st Century World Herald, a weekly paper.
The paper opened last year and had a circulation of more than 200,000. Sources close to the paper said the order to close came from Guangdong province’s propaganda department.
