U.S. Finishes Fast at World Indoors

Tyree Washington started it all with a victory in the 400 meters. He ended it by anchoring the 1,600-meter relay team to victory.

During a 2 1/2-hour span Sunday, the United States won seven gold medals and 10 medals overall at the World Indoor Championships, including Washington’s win over defending champion Daniel Caines of Britain in the 400 in 45.34.

In all, the Americans finished the three-day meet with 17 medals, including a championship-record 10 gold, three silver and four bronze.

The U.S. showing overshadowed a world record in the women’s pole vault by Russia’s Svetlana Feofanova, who cleared 15-9 to reclaim the mark from Stacy Dragila.

Feofanova bettered the record of 15-8 1/4 set by Dragila on March 2. Dragila failed to clear a qualifying height Saturday.
