Judge Says School Can’t Stop Students’ Messages
A federal judge ruled that a high school cannot suspend students for handing out candy canes with religious messages.
U.S. District Court Judge Frank Freedman said a policy at Westfield High School that prohibits the distribution of printed material on school grounds without permission violated the students’ 1st Amendment rights. Members of the school’s Bible club handed out candy canes with religious messages after the principal said they were not allowed do so.
A lawyer for the school said it will revise its policies.
