2 Deals to Boost Univision’s Portfolio to 53 Stations

Univision Communications said Wednesday that it is buying two TV stations -- one near Sacramento, the nation’s 15th-largest Latino market, and another in Raleigh, N.C. -- increasing the Los Angeles-based Spanish-language conglomerate’s portfolio to 53 stations.

Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Univision said it has agreed to buy KFTL Channel 64 in Stockton from Family Stations Inc. to carry programming for its second broadcast network, TeleFutura, which focuses on sports, news briefs and telenovelas.

KFTL, an independent station, broadcasts religious and shopping programs in English. Univision already owns a station in Sacramento, KUVS, which is part of its flagship network.

Univision, controlled by Los Angeles billionaire A. Jerrold Perenchio, said it also has purchased WKFT Channel 40 in Raleigh, an independent station that broadcasts syndicated programming, from Bahakel Communications Inc. The station will switch its call letters to WUVC and begin broadcasting Univision programming in June.
