Chief Defends Forceful Policing by Department

Police Chief Richard Word defended his department’s aggressive policing Thursday as he testified in the trial of former officers accused of kidnapping and beating suspects and lying to cover their alleged crimes.
Word said his efforts to target street-level drug dealing did not condone the behavior of the now-fired officers known as “The Riders.” He said officers should know the difference between proactive police work and violating civil rights.
