Two weeks after suffering critical injuries in a pre-race accident, Possum Bourne, New Zealand’s only professional rally car driver, died Wednesday. He was 47. Bourne raced thousands of miles on rally courses the world over. In more than 20 years of racing, he won the Asia-Pacific title three times and the Australian Rally title a record seven times.

Bourne’s accident occurred as he was driving on a public road checking the route for a hill climb. His station wagon and a Jeep driven by a fellow competitor collided.
