* WorldCom Inc., which plans to exit bankruptcy protection this year under the name MCI, is raising residential long-distance telephone rates again as it tries to stem a 14% decline in sales.

* Spiegel Inc., a catalog retailer that filed for bankruptcy protection in March, said it would fire 635 workers in Washington state as it closes a customer service center and trims staff at its headquarters and Eddie Bauer unit.

* Pfizer Inc. said it would expand its New York operations over the next year, adding 1,000 positions and spending $400 million to acquire and renovate office space.
