Pope John Paul II has chosen the Vatican representative to United Nations agencies in Geneva, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, as coadjutor for Dublin, meaning he will eventually take over the troubled Irish archdiocese.

Dublin’s current archbishop, Cardinal Desmond Connell, 77, is expected to retire soon.

Clerical sex abuse scandals have rocked the Irish church in recent years. The Dublin Archdiocese alone faces more than 500 complaints dating to the 1960s.

Connell, accused of ignoring charges against priests, has issued high-profile apologies in recent months.
