2 Emmys for a Daytime ‘New Kid’

Wayne Brady, who took over Rosie O’Donnell’s time slot across much of the country and her role as a breezy entertainer, won two Daytime Emmys on Friday at Radio City Music Hall.

Brady was named best talk show host and “The Wayne Brady Show” tied with “The View,” a Barbara Walters creation, for best talk show.

“I’m still the new kid on the block doing this daytime show,” Brady said. “I stumbled onto something wonderful.”

In the soap opera world, daytime diva Susan Flannery of “The Bold and the Beautiful” won best actress; Maurice Benard of “General Hospital” won for best actor. “As the World Turns” won best daytime drama.

After PBS’ “Reading Rainbow” was named best children’s series for the seventh time, executive producer LeVar Burton pleaded for its survival, saying a shortage of funding may make this its last year.

“Sesame Street” was named best preschool children’s series, its 86th Emmy since its debut.

Alex Trebek, host of “Jeopardy,” won best game show host, and “Jeopardy” was named best game show for the ninth time.

Vanessa Marcil of “General Hospital” and Benjamin Hendrickson of “As the World Turns” won supporting actor trophies.

The Daytime Emmys are given out by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
