From Times Wire Reports

Federal lawmakers are seeking $31.5 million in aid for Valley Center avocado growers whose crops have been quarantined by an infestation of Mexican fruit flies.

Ten U.S. representatives from California made the request this week in a letter to Henry Bonilla, chairman of the House appropriations subcommittee on agriculture.

Nearly half of all avocados grown in California come from San Diego County, according to the California Avocado Commission. The state supplies 86% of avocados grown in the United States.
