Ranks of Nonreligious Grow Among Canadians
The number of Canadians who identify themselves as not having a religion has grown to 16% of the population, up from 12% in 1990, according to census figures released this month.
Still, the census showed that some religions flourished during the last decade.
The number of Muslims in Canada doubled, to 579,600, and now represent 2% of the country’s population of 31 million. Canada now has more Muslims than Jews, who number 329,995, the census showed.
The number of Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs nearly doubled, to about 300,000 each. Immigration accounted for most of the growth, analysts said.
Roman Catholics remain the dominant religious group in Canada, at 43% of the population. Protestants account for 29% of the population.
