Salary Payments to Civil Workers Begin

U.S. occupation authorities in Iraq began distributing monthly salary payments to the first of 1.3 million civil service workers, amid confused and sometimes chaotic scenes.
The payments, the first for the public employees since the war began two months ago, range from $100 to $500 a month.
At one payment point in southern Baghdad, two Bradley fighting vehicles were called in when some desperate workers threatened violence after rumors that they might not be paid.
