Novell Inc., whose software is used to manage computer networks, challenged claims made by SCO Group Inc. that its intellectual property rights are violated by Linux computer programs, which run 14% of servers sold in 2002.

Provo, Utah-based Novell retains the patents and copyrights that SCO would need to mount a viable challenge, Novell Chief Executive Jack Messman wrote in a letter to the CEO at SCO. Messman accused SCO of trying to “sow fear, uncertainty and doubt” about the freely available operating system.
