The Los Angeles Unified School District said it is abandoning plans to repair a mold-infested Department of Water and Power building that was scheduled to be converted into a sorely needed high school.

Instead, the school board voted 4 to 0 to buy the site for $37 million -- $13 million less than the price before mold was found last year -- raze it and build a school on the site.
