Biology textbooks -- A news brief in Saturday’s Section A about the Texas Board of Education’s adoption of new biology textbooks containing the theory of evolution incorrectly said that the approval came over the opposition of scientists. In fact, 550 Texas scientists and educators signed a letter urging the board to adopt the texts. Religious conservatives sought to have the books rejected.

Opponents had argued that weaknesses in the evolution theory were not adequately presented in the books. But scientists and educators argued that the theory was widely believed and a cornerstone of modern scientific research.
