Dewan P. Chand, 87; Indian General Was U.N. Peacekeeper
Dewan Prem Chand, 87, an Indian general who served for decades as a U.N. peacekeeper, died Monday of age-related health problems at an army hospital in New Delhi.
Chand joined the Indian army in 1937 under British rule. After India won independence in 1947, he moved to the Gurkha regiment, known for its fierce fighters. He retired from the service in 1967.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan praised Chand as “a legend among the United Nations peacekeepers” and said he had set standards for generations of U.N. colleagues.
Chand served the United Nations in Congo, Cyprus, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
