Genes Linked to Origin of Psoriasis, Study Finds

From Times Wire Reports

Researchers have discovered a trio of genes that likely help provide the complex origins of psoriasis, the itchy skin disease triggered when the immune system runs amok.

The genes, when defective, increase a patient’s susceptibility to the incurable disease that afflicts about 2% of the population, according to a study appearing in the electronic edition of the journal Nature Genetics.

“We’re just putting together the first pieces of a big puzzle,” said Anne Bowcock of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The study suggests the genes may be implicated in other autoimmune diseases.
