The top U.S. and Vietnamese defense officials talked about Asian security and other bilateral issues in the first such meeting in the Pentagon since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.

Flanked by an honor guard, a smiling Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld stood on the steps of the Pentagon to greet Vietnamese Defense Minister Pham Van Tra.

A Pentagon statement issued after the meeting said it “highlighted positive progress in the overall defense relationship” between the two countries.
