U.S. Role in Guatemala
Re “A Moral Test for Guatemala,” editorial, Nov. 7: I noticed with trepidation that your editorial on the instability of Guatemalan society, which caused a “decades-long rampage of rape, torture and genocide,” for some reason fails to mention the U.S.-backed coup in the 1950s that overthrew the duly-elected Arbenz government that led to all the instability and hundreds of thousands of deaths, or the role that United Fruit Co. played in that Central American bloodletting. That part of the story probably just slipped your mind.
