Escapee Found Guilty in Police Officer’s Murder

The last of seven escaped prisoners to be tried for killing a police officer during their 2000 breakout was convicted of capital murder in Dallas.
Patrick Murphy, 42, was found guilty in the slaying of Irving Officer Aubrey Hawkins, who was shot and run over in a robbery Dec. 24, 2000.
Five of the prisoners have been sentenced to death. One killed himself before he could be recaptured.
Prosecutors said that they will be seeking the death penalty in the penalty phase, which begins Monday.
