Mary Lyons has taken the helm of the University of San Diego, becoming its third president since the Catholic college merged its men’s and women’s programs in 1972.

During a ceremony to mark the start of her term Sunday, Lyons called on the university’s students, faculty and staff to put greater emphasis on public service.

“This university can be a mediating influence on behalf of many of its own neighbors who are poor, sick or culturally or linguistically isolated,” she said.
