From Staff and Wire Reports

A federal judge has approved a settlement agreement between the U.S. Navy and supporters of a commercial airport at the closed El Toro Marine base who had challenged plans to sell the land to developers.

U.S. District Judge Gary L. Taylor on Tuesday officially approved agreement terms reached last month. The Navy will conduct further environmental studies and pay for attorneys fees in the case.

The base is slated to become a complex of parks, homes and businesses.

The Navy will begin auctioning the land next year.
