Beijing to Deploy Troops as Liberia Peacekeepers
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
China will send peacekeeping police and soldiers to Liberia in coming days, after the war-ravaged African nation switched ties from rival Taiwan to China last month, state media said.
Five policemen will fly to Liberia on Sunday to join a U.N. mission that will eventually number 1,200, public security ministry sources were quoted as saying.
The peacekeepers reflect efforts by China to boost its profile as a key international player through the United Nations.
