Iraqi Infant in Critical Condition After Surgery
A 9-day-old Iraqi girl who was hurriedly moved to Israel for surgery to repair a potentially fatal heart disorder was in stable but critical condition after spending 21 hours on the operating table, said a volunteer who helped in the transfer.
Bayan Jabbar, born Nov. 18 near Tikrit in northern Iraq, remained in the intensive-care unit of a hospital in Holon, Israel, where she and her Kurdish parents arrived Tuesday with members of a charity group that helps children with heart ailments.
Complications from the operation to repair reversed arteries kept surgeons at work on her overnight Wednesday, said Jonathan Miles, a U.S. volunteer.
