A 38-year-old man who was charged for having sex inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral as a radio broadcast stunt has died of apparent heart failure.

Brian Florence, 38, died in Alexandria, Va., on Thursday, said the defense attorney for Florence and his wife, Loretta Harper, who was also charged in the bizarre August 2002 incident.

“We are all in shock -- he was a young guy,” said the attorney, Maranda Fritz, in a New York court. The comedian who had narrated the couple’s X-rated cathedral exploits, Paul Mercurio, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.
